A strong business partnership is like having a best friend in the job world. This type of relationship can last for several years and be just as valuable to a workplace as active stakeholders and talented employees. Broadview University-Orem is lucky enough to have such a partnership with RiverWoods Pet Hospital.

As Broadview’s top externship site for students earning a vet tech degree, RiverWoods Pet Hospital helps teach classes, offers charitable donations to fundraisers, and makes their resources available to the school whenever the need arises. Vet tech graduates are welcomed with open arms, and many graduates choose to work there after a great externship experience. Kimberly Clark, Lindsey Norton and Gina Reeder are among our vet tech graduates who decided to make their externship a daily occupation.

Riverwoods Pet Hospital staff members

Current students Sydney Howlett and James Reid are also working at the hospital, and will potentially be two more students to take on full-time positions once they graduate.

Owner and founder of the hospital, Dr. Yoeny Calas-Dobson, has been a practicing veterinarian for more than 20 years and is also a Program Advisory Committee (PAC) member with Broadview University. She teaches courses such as Lab Animals, Exotics and Pocket Pets, where she shares her passion and expertise with students looking to follow in her footsteps.

This lasting partnership between Broadview and RiverWoods is due in part to the longstanding relationship that Heather Riggs (Broadview-Orem’s vet tech program chair) has had with the staff at RiverWoods, having worked there for more than 13 years herself. She appreciates the hospital’s focus on employing certified vet techs as opposed to people with no education or experience working with animals.

“Community partners who value educated technicians are priceless,” Heather says. “They help graduating vet techs get the recognition they deserve.”

A mutually beneficial partnership, both Broadview and RiverWoods have supported each other through the good times and the bad. Here’s to many more years to come!

Utah’s courts are going paperless. Starting this spring, e-filing is becoming mandatory in the district courts. E-filing saves attorneys and their firms’ money concerning time, paper and mailing/delivery costs. Documents filed through e-filing are immediately delivered and entered into the court dockets. Attorneys have unlimited free access to documents filed online in the cases and receive email notifications and receipt messages which are considered to be valid service.

It’s an important development for students in Broadview University’s paralegal degree program as they stay up to date on current industry trends. Understanding the new system is another way Broadview works to stay apprised of industry standards and better comprehend the state’s court system.

As of April 1, 2013 e-filing is mandatory for pleadings and other documents in all civil and domestic matters, and paper filings will no longer be accepted. E-filing will become mandatory for all probate matters including pleadings and other documents beginning July 1, 2013. While e-filing is not mandatory in criminal proceedings both prosecuting and defense attorneys may also e-file.

To register for e-filing, attorneys must open an account with a certified e-filing service provider (EFSP). There are three EFSP’s for Utah: Utah State Bar/ Tybera Devlopment Group, Inc., Green Filing, LLC, or Judicialink, LLC. While the court does not charge a fee for e-filing; filers do have to pay a subscription fee to an EFSP. Attorneys who do only government work may be eligible for a fee-waiver on their subscription.

Training on how to e-file can be received through the EFSP that the attorney subscribes to. The Utah State Bar also provides e-filing seminar. There is also additional information on e-filing training at the Utah courts e-filing website.

For more information on e-filing in Utah visit the courts website, including the Electronic Filing Guide, a list of EFSP providers, as well as other tips and training materials. Additional information can also be found on the Utah State Bar’s Website.

As the joke goes, the difference between an English major and a large pizza is that a large pizza can feed a family of four. English majors get teased all the time with jokes like this, yet so many of them end up pursuing law degrees.

Broadview University-Orem’s new paralegal program chair, Sean Nobmann, did exactly that. After earning his bachelor’s degree in English from Brigham Young University, he went on to enroll at Duke University—one of the most prestigious universities in the nation, with an acceptance rate of a mere 14 percent—to earn his Juris Doctorate.

When asked how his English degree helped him in his career, he said, “An English major actually prepares you more for writing legal briefs than for writing novels.”

Sean Nobmann, Paralegal Program Chair

Sean went on to explain that literary analysis is more like legal analysis than literature itself, which is why so many English majors go on to law school.

So, where did it all begin for Sean?

Born and raised in Washington State on Mercer Island near Seattle, Sean loved reading about U.S. history and about the lives of America’s founding fathers. He never considered law school until his father gave him a book in college that contained several articles written by famous attorneys who described their careers and their love for the law. That book helped Sean understand the significant connection between law and our nation’s founding.

After receiving his J.D., Sean became a first year associate at a law firm. His experience both in corporate litigation and in personal injury cases allowed him to work closely with the firm’s paralegals (assistants to attorneys). This helped lay the groundwork for his current position as Broadview’s paralegal program chair, because he was able to observe the skills that made paralegals great assets to lawyers and court cases. Today, Sean strives to help his students see the value they can add to the workforce.

Sean’s number one goal for the Broadview University paralegal program is to have all of his students placed in job positions before they graduate. He knows that by just being enrolled in the program, his students are already more employable and their chances of being hired are greatly increased. He also looks forward to creating more awareness of the paralegal program in hopes that it will grow in Utah County.

Future students interested in the paralegal program—with inclinations toward reading, writing, strategic thinking, or with interests in politics, history, or government—should seriously consider enrolling in the paralegal program.

Take a moment to analyze how you’re sitting right now (or before you read “posture” in the title). Are you slouched over your desk or slumped in your chair? Are your legs crossed or extended out in front of you? These are very common positions for students to be in during class. They may seem comfortable at first but you are putting your body under a great deal of stress that can lead to back pain, headaches and even scoliosis.

Keep the pain away. No more slouching!

Imagine holding a ten pound bowling bowl straight overhead. The weight of the bowling ball travels down your arm and is dispersed throughout your body, allowing you to hold the ball in the air for quite a long time. Now imagine letting that ball travel a few inches forward. Your shoulder muscles now have to work extremely hard to hold that ball up. This is exactly what is happening in our bodies to hold our head up.

When we sit and stand with ideal posture, the weight of our head is balanced on our body so our neck muscles are helping with the job of holding it up. Once we allow our head to slip forward, our upper back and neck muscles have to fight to hold it up. We develop knots, or trigger points, that send pain to other body parts. Trigger points in the upper back can refer pain up into the head, a major reason for headaches. Similarly, having your legs crossed or extended out in front of you for long periods of time can lead to low back pain, which can cause leg pain.

It can be difficult to sit perfectly all of the time, but you can try and reset your posture often. Here are 6 tips that can help keep the pain away.

Make yourself a note by your computer to remind you to sit up, or check in with yourself whenever you remember.

Take a break every hour that you are at a desk or computer. Get up, move around, and stretch.

Tilt your head back to allow your neck muscles to relax for a moment.

Pull your arms back at your sides and squeeze your shoulder blades together. This helps stretch your chest and takes the pressure off your back muscles.

Sit up tall and rotate from the waist side to side to stretch your low back.

Talk to our massage therapy students or program chair about getting a free massage in the Broadview University student clinic.

As a Broadview University-Layton massage therapy program instructor, I enjoy sharing case studies associated with current lessons. Too often, the scenarios shared are from a mental catalog separated by memory into files bearing titles like “Don’t be this therapist” and “What a great outcome!”. This new file bears the title, “Opportunities are everywhere.”

I was attending my physician’s appointment when a sweet, young, and very pregnant nurse who knew my professional association quietly approached me to ask for a chiropractic referral.

Awkwardly, since we were standing in a Western medical clinic, I responded that I could assist her, but begged the question, “Why?” I viewed the situation and determined she had unlimited medical resources at her disposal and by career association indicated support of Western medical concepts.

To my ignorant surprise, she identified she was in a lot of pain and felt as though a rib was “out” and believed a chiropractic adjustment would pop the rib back into place and relieve the pain she was experiencing with very shallow breath.

Immediately, I moved into assessment mode and became a massage therapist. I began with an impromptu client interview asking her questions associated with her complaint. I followed the questions with simple assessment activities. She was compliant with each inquiry and activity requested. Upon review of the information, I suggested I could help her as I believed the issue was soft tissue in nature and not skeletal.

Before I knew it she had shared our discussion and conclusions with the office. In a blink, the office administration was collecting equipment, clearing a patient room, and making space for a prenatal massage.

Forty minutes from the initiation of massage protocols, we emerged from the room. That same sweet nurse was breathing without pain or restriction. An eclectic application of massage modalities suited for prenatal massage addressed the soft tissue restriction in the serratus anterior muscle, which had previously impaired costal movement due to a trigger point and subsequent muscular tension—all of which prohibited pain free functional respiration. Massage therapy skills are useful in many situations, even Western medical offices.

This Friday, May 17, Broadview University–Orem will be participating in the University’s annual Community Service Day, where staff, faculty members, and students all come together for a day of service to the community (as the name implies). Serving in the same capacity as last year, participants will help set up bicycle racks,

Community Service Day 2012

registration and first aid tents, entrance and exit signs, banners, flags, and everything else required for the Women of Steel Triathlon at the American Fork Fitness Center.

A few of Broadview’s staff and faculty weighed in on their favorite memories from previous years.

Rachel Chapman, associate director of admissions, thought it was funny how there were a few ”OCD people” last year who kept going back and straightening the bicycle racks to all align with each other. Sometimes it takes group activities like these to reveal people’s personality quirks.

Dave Powell, dean of education, enjoyed the group picture that was taken last year (pictured right).

Tim Sutton, medical assisting instructor, loves Community Service Day because he gets to work with members of other departments—like admissions and financial aid—that he doesn’t get to see or work with on a daily basis.

But not everything is bright and sunny for Ryan Farley, campus director, who is frustrated that for several years now, this event has been dampened with rain. He thinks that if we ever need rain in the Valley, all we have to do is schedule a Community Service Day. (Sure enough, the weather forecast for this Friday is likely to follow the same gloomy-skies tradition.)

Even though the service activity this year is the same as last year’s, there are plenty of new faces and new memories to be made on the fields of the American Fork Fitness Center this Friday. To learn more, visit the event page on Facebook.

Congratulations to Sandy Police Officer and Broadview University criminal justice degree student, Anthony Tueller. Tony was one of the first officers to participate in the Peace Officer Scholarship program at the Broadview University-West Jordan campus and has worked extremely hard to reach his goal of earning his bachelor’s degree, which will open up career opportunities.

He was shocked and excited when he initially heard that Broadview University was accepting his training and experience with prior learning credits for his academy classroom hours. This had always been a hurdle for Tony, along with many other officers, that higher education did not respect and value the training received throughout their career. Broadview University did.

The Peace Officer Scholarship has been a huge success, and Criminal Justice Program Chair Daniel Swanson states it best: “This is a way to say thank you for protecting our streets, and we do value the training that each officer receives.”

The scholarship in no way gives away credits; the officers earn every single one of them.

Tony joined the Sandy police department back in 2006 and has worked numerous assignments. He is currently a detective working on the FBI/Safe Streets Gang Task Force. He has been an active member of the SWAT team and has spread his knowledge and experience through teaching numerous classes to his co-workers.

By attaining his bachelor’s degree, the world of opportunity has opened up to Tony. Most in law enforcement never have the opportunity to further their career at the federal level due to lacking the necessary bachelor’s degree. This opportunity now waits for him.

Tony said, “It is gratifying to know that I now have the credentials to apply to the FBI if I so desire.”

Tony has greatly enhanced his resume and the opportunity to be promoted as well. Most departments in the Utah area require a bachelor’s degree to promote. Tony’s comment reflects the overwhelming majority of officers enrolled.

“Going back to school has been one of the best decisions I have made,” Tony said.

Broadview University is proud to help him achieve his goal and dream.

White and gray matter, meninges, the cerebellum—Broadview University-Layton students got a firsthand look at these and other areas of the brain recently. The students, who are taking the Human Anatomy and Physiology II class as part of the medical assistant degree program, dissected a sheep’s brain as a hands-on learning project.

The dissection of the sheep’s brain gave the class the opportunity to get their hands dirty with the central nervous system. The students’ understanding of the complex system grew as they better understood topics that before were vague or foggy, and they gained greater appreciation for the central nervous system as a whole.

Next, the medical assistant students will explore the cardiovascular system. They will dissect a sheep’s heart, look at their blood underneath the microscope, figure out how detectives utilize blood splatters, and complete various other activities.

Every year, the month of May greets us like a ray of sunshine with warmer weather and a variety of holidays. It’s the time of year when we trade in our wool coats and Ugg boots for beach shorts and flip-flops. We plan family vacations, attend graduation ceremonies, and dress up for our friends’ weddings. Indeed, May brings with it holidays of all kinds—not to mention an extra helping of seasonal allergies.

Cinco de Mayo – May 5th

Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Spanish for “pass the guacamole,” even though Americans consume up to 81 million avocados on this day. It is actually Spanish for “fifth of May,” and it commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. What this means for Americans is that we have an excuse to stuff our faces with chips and salsa all night while wearing a sombrero and hitting a piñata.

Broadview University-Orem‘s students enjoyed some Cinco de Mayo festivities on campus earlier this week. James Reid was even willing to wear a piñata hat. Way to get in the holiday spirit, James!

National Teacher Day – May 7th

The motto of this holiday goes something like this: Teachers are underpaid, under-appreciated, overworked, and have the hardest job in the world. It’s because of our teachers that we are who we are today. We owe them our lives. Okay, maybe I went a little too far with that last bit, but you get the idea.

Mother’s Day – Second Sunday in May

Freshly cut flowers, sappy Hallmark cards, fancy restaurant dinners, and pretty much anything else that communicates a message of “Mom, I love you,” are customary gestures on this day of pro-motherhood. The worst thing you can possibly do is forget Mother’s Day, so mark this date on your calendar and find some way to show your mom you love her (lest you face the consequences).

Armed Forces Day – May 18th

In 1949, President Harry S. Truman initiated this holiday for all the citizens of this great nation to come together and pay homage to our fellow Americans serving in the military. I contest that in order to fully reflect on the contributions of these brave men and women, I need the day off of work. Possibly two days off of work—maybe up to a week off in order to properly salute these heroic members of society. (In other words, we can never express enough thanks to those who fight for our freedom.)

Pentecost – May 19th

Without feeling like I’m giving a Sunday school lesson (and trust me, I’m not qualified), Pentecost is a Christian holiday that celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Twelve Apostles and other followers of Jesus as described in the Bible. Many Christians regard the Pentecost as the “Birthday of the Church,” and that’s reason enough to celebrate!

Memorial Day – Final Monday in May

Quite possibly my favorite May holiday (except, of course, for Mother’s Day—love you, Mom!), this holiday gets it right. It commemorates our brave soldiers who died while fighting for freedom. It’s always the last Monday of May, and it always means a day off of work, school, and anything else you had planned . . . unless your plans included a beach trip to Hawaii, then enjoy your three-day vacation!

May your May be filled with all kinds of mayhem and may you remember to always express much appreciation to your mothers, mentors, and military members this month.

Stress is inevitable (unless you are dead, and even then you probably won’t escape it entirely). In my opinion, the two biggest stress relievers are laughter and a good massage. I say a good massage because not all massages—or massage therapists—are created equal.

So, what does it take to become a good massage therapist?

ReAhna Dobson, Massage Student

Natural Talent

Instruction

Practice

A lack of talent can be overcome, to a certain extent, by the second two. After all, not all of us were born with a magic set of hands.

Instruction is the easy part, especially when your instructor is a talented massage therapist like Vicki Bant, Broadview University-Orem’s massage therapy program chair.

Practice is the third essential quality that all good massage therapists require—lots of practice. In fact, massage students are expected to spend a significant amount of time outside of the classroom practicing their skills. In addition, as part of their program, they are required to participate in clinics held on campus.

This quarter, Broadview-Orem is offering three clinics:

Sports Massage: Monday Night

Prenatal Massage: Tuesday Afternoon

Swedish Massage: Saturday Afternoon

Sports Massage

Gaining popularity nationwide, this massage technique is mostly targeted toward athletes but is also good for anyone who may suffer from muscle overuse or constant repetitive movements. It includes stretches, targeting muscle-tendon junctions, and working on a client’s range of motion. Athletes who are anticipating an upcoming event may ask for this massage as part of their preparations in order to maximize their performance, increase flexibility and endurance, and reduce fatigue. After the event, this massage can also help with recovery and sore muscles.

Cliff Hunsaker, Massage Student

Broadview massage students are currently providing pre-game and post-game sports massages to the Utah Blaze football players

Prenatal Massage

This massage is part of a broader category of massages or “special populations” massages. Examples of special populations would include geriatric massage, child and infant massage, and even animal massage. A prenatal massage is, as the name suggests, a massage for expecting women. It is a great way to relieve some of the discomforts of pregnancy, such as the “knife” in the back sensation, the Charlie horse that attacks in the middle of the night, and the uncomfortable swelling of the ankles and feet.

I used to think the expression “barefoot and pregnant” referred to the economic concerns of pregnancy. I later found, through personal experiences, that it refers to a woman’s feet being so swollen during pregnancy that her shoes no longer fit. What better reason for a pregnant woman to get the prenatal massage than to help her to be able to slip back into her favorite shoes?

The most obvious obstacle of the prenatal massage is the client’s inability to lie in a “prone position,” which is the term used to describe a client lying face down on the massage table. Not to worry! Massage therapists have already figured this one out. Lying in a sideways position with proper supporting pillows and cushions, the pregnant woman can enjoy a comfortable massage designed to relieve tension, anxiety, as well as many of the physical discomforts common to pregnancy while promoting emotional wellness.

Swedish Massage

This massage is generally designed for relaxation. It can be combined with deep tissue massage which employs deeper pressure and focuses on the deepest layers of muscle tissue. It is most beneficial when dealing with long term muscle tension. As the joke goes, how can the massage therapist determine if the pressure is okay? If the client is seeing dead relatives beckoning them toward a bright light, that may be an indication that the pressure is too much. The amount of pressure used is determined by both the therapist and the client. Special care is always taken to provide a therapeutic massage with minimal discomfort.

As instructor Vicki Bant puts it, after working a particularly painful muscle group, you have to “make nice afterwards.”

Our massage clinics are open to staff, students and the general public. Massages are free (although donations for the massage club are appreciated and encouraged). Feedback is provided to the massage students so that they can further hone their skills.

The Multicultural Youth Leadership Summit was held on April 30 at the Davis Conference Center in Layton, Utah, for the first time. Governor Gary R. Herbert has launched an educational initiative to have 66 percent of all working-age Utahans armed with a post-secondary degree or certificate by the year 2020. The event involved students ranging from seventh grade to twelfth as well as parents, teachers, community leaders, the state government, and a variety of organizations.

As interactive members of the community, Broadview University-Layton supported the event by sending High School Coordinator, Shae Erhart, to assist in answering questions that students had relating to college.

“It was empowering and motivating to see the excitement that the students had when it comes to pursuing a college education and making a difference in their communities,” Shae said. “Being able to help guide a wide variety of students in the direction of a college education was a positive and powerful experience. Our youth are our future, and it’s these types of events that help to ensure our communities will continue growing and remain strong.”

During the event students and other participants were able to listen to messages from leaders from a variety of backgrounds. Keynote speakers included Christina Flores from KUTV, Senator Ross Romero, and Utah Lieutenant Governor Greg Bell.

Throughout the day students participated in breakout sessions involving a variety of different topics from “Leadership and Empowerment” to “Appreciating our Differences.” The breakout sessions were conducted by CoolSpeak members Derek Fulton, Ernesto Mejia, Carlos Ojeda Jr., Joaquin Zihuatanejo, and Natasha Carrizosa.

Lunch provided a new sort of entertainment for the students as the Urban Dance Organization brought a new type of motivation and understanding to the crowd. The organization is a nonprofit from Salt Lake City and designed to encourage participants to ignore differences while embracing the backgrounds that people come from through the common language of dance. The group showed some of their skills, and then invited students on stage to show off as well! Students left the event with smiles, excitement, and a new motivation to bring positive energy into their communities, and believe that they can create a fulfilling and promising life for themselves.

(BOISE) As a steady stream of cars snake their way through the parking lot at the Idaho Transportation Department on State Street in Boise, there is a lot more going on here than meets the eye. While the Better Business Bureau gears up for its biannual “Secure Your ID Day” event, students at Broadview University are about to learn a lesson not typically found in any textbook. Class on the curb is in session—and a lot more than wheels are turning.

Business Program Chair Debra Schmidt (center) likes to give her students real-world experiences as part of their coursework. Schmidt and business program students Nathan Owen (left) and David Gustafson (right) were among nine people from Broadview University who volunteered at the Better Business Bureau’s “Secure Your ID Day” event.

It’s Saturday morning, April 20. Hundreds of cars are about to drive through the parking lot and drop off documents for the free document shredding event. Six students in Debra Schmidt’s classes are here to do three things: watch, lead, and learn.

Schmidt, the business program chair, likes to give her students real-world experiences as part of their coursework. Although the students at this event are volunteering their time, the lessons they are learning are invaluable. Their jobs are to safely direct traffic during the two-hour event. The goal is to make sure everything runs smoothly. Non-verbal communication is key.

“What I found is that people just don’t like to listen—even if you aren’t talking,” Stephanie Birkinbine, a student in the medical administrative assistant program, said. “I kept motioning for drivers to get as close to each other as possible, and they would maybe move up an inch. It was so frustrating.”

“It wasn’t that bad for me,” David Gustafson, a business program student, said. “I just pointed my arrow and it told them where to go.”

Criminal Justice program student Alysha Cossey (left) and medical administrative assistant students Stephanie Birkinbine (right) and Michelle Pratt (middle, background) learn the ins and outs of non-verbal communication as they work to direct traffic for the free shred day event.

The six students—three from the business program, two from the medical administrative assistant program, and one from the criminal justice program—were among the many volunteers who helped on this day. By the end of their two-hour shift, more than 33,000 pounds of documents were shredded on site, 20 old cell phones were accepted for recycling, and 65 computers, monitors and printers were donated to be scrubbed and given to Computers for Kids. Zero fender benders were reported. Overall: success.

This is the third year that Broadview University has volunteered to help with this event. Each time, students learn something new.

“Events like this give students an opportunity to see people in action,” Schmidt said. “It’s great because you can’t teach exposure like this in class.”

Planet Earth is important for us all and as Melisa Lovato, a Student Ambassador from the massage therapy program, would say, “There is no Planet B.”

On April 22nd at the Broadview University-Layton campus, the Student Ambassadors, led by Melisa Lovato, organized various activities for Earth Day.

No matter where you looked there was material trying to raise awareness for Earth Day. As you stepped into the lounge you were greeted by tables with an assortment of fruits and vegetables, one of which was centered by a tree made mostly from “upcycling” old bottles and paper.

On the other side you would find Melisa sitting at the table where you could turn eggshells into a planter which you could plant directly into the soil once the flowers inside germinated. When you looked into another corner of the room, you would see several colorful sheets of paper, each with its own Earth Day pledge where students could take a picture with their choice of one or many to do their part for the planet.

Throughout the event, as students came in or went on break from their class, they would make their way around the lounge asking various questions about each station. Several students and some faculty sat for their picture with a pledge of choice. Even the Student Ambassadors who were holding the event took a moment to each make at least one pledge.

Students took some time to enjoy more natural foods than those littering the vending machines. Many would idle around one food or another and explain how they do enjoy having healthier foods. As the early portion of the event died down the students were left with the buffet of fruits and vegetables to enjoy at their leisure.

Earth Day ended with Student Ambassador RaeAnn Johnson from the business program going from class to class passing out magnets to help students remember that their planet is important and we should all do our part to keep it healthy for generations to come.

Broadview University-Orem’s vet tech program chair, Heather Riggs, has been giving presentations to firefighters all over Utah County.

Why firefighters?

Firefighters have one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. In risking their lives to save our friends and neighbors, they also risk their lives to save our family pets. Just like humans need CPR and first aid treatments, dogs and cats need their own type of emergency medical attention. If the proper techniques are used, our pets can be revived even before being taken to the veterinarian. Heather has been teaching the firefighters about emergency rescue techniques for animals.

Covering topics such as assessing the body language of animals, quick restraint tips, and CPR, she uses her adorable bulldog, Rocky, as a visual aid in her demonstrations.

Rocky’s laid back temperament makes him the star of the show. Donning a cute firefighter outfit (pants included), he allows Heather to adjust his body into various positions without a bark of objection.

Here is a basic rundown of the steps to take when administering animal CPR:

Check for breathing and a pulse.

Pulse is taken with the middle and index finger on the animal’s inner thigh (femoral artery), below the ankle, below the wrist, or where the left elbow touches the chest.

If the animal is not breathing, give mouth-to-snout breath.

Cats and small dogs: Place mouth over its nose and mouth to blow air in.

Medium to large dogs: Place mouth over its nose to blow air in.

If the airway is blocked, give Heimlich maneuver.

Rocky is especially tolerant during this demonstration, as Heather lifts him upside down—her arms wrapped around his body—and shows everyone how to give five sharp thrusts just below the rib cage (which is above the rib cage when holding the animal upside down).

If the animal has no pulse, start chest compressions.

Heather Riggs with Provo firefighters.

Lay animal on its right side and place hands over ribs where its elbow touches its chest (closest to its heart) and begin chest compressions.

Repeat procedure.

Check pulse after one minute and then every few minutes. Continue giving CPR until animal has a pulse and is breathing. Stop CPR after 20 minutes.

Toward the end of the presentations, the firefighters are invited to participate in some hands-on training with stuffed dog models (and Rocky) to help facilitate the learning process.

By learning just a few simple steps, these firefighters are now equipped with the skills necessary to not only rescue, but bring back to life our furry loved ones.

The Broadview University campus in Layton just finished celebrating National Library Week with an entire week of library activities. The week culminated in a library open house for a chance to become better acquainted with our new campus librarian, Paul Daybell.

Pay Daybell is the new campus librarian at Broadview University-Layton

Paul joined the Broadview University family at the end of March and has happily dived right into the daily hubbub of the library. Previously he was employed as a catalog assistant at Utah State University, where he worked for two years while he finished his Master’s degree in Library and Information Science. It has been a new challenge moving from a position where his main daily interactions were with books to being the center of the Broadview University-Layton campus library universe.

This is Paul’s first professional library gig and it has been exciting being able to learn all the new aspects that make the library run. However, his favorite part of the job is being able to interact with and help the students as they strive to reach their own educational goals.

Throughout National Library Week, students were invited to post their favorite book titles for a chance to win some nice Broadview swag. Members of the Broadview staff and faculty also created bookmarks with their own Top Ten Must Reads list so students could get a better idea of what makes their professors tick.

Paralegal Program Chair Jessica Nelson spoke lovingly of Neal Gabler’s “Walt Disney: The Triumph of American Imagination,” while Cassie Olsen, Director of Career Services, had a list full of motivating self-help books. Both the staff and students were excited to have these new lists of titles to explore.

During the open house students were able to drop by the library for hot pizza and some grilling get-to-know-you conversation with the new librarian. This was a great opportunity for students to become familiar with their new go-to source for information on campus.

If you haven’t had the chance to stop by the library to say hello, please drop in. You are always welcome.

Morgan Pedersen, veterinary technology degree student at Broadview University-Orem, grew up with dogs as pets and worked a little bit with horses and cattle. When she decided on a service learning project, she wanted one that would stretch her comfort zone while still allowing her to work with animals. The Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Northern Utah (WRCNU) provided her with the perfect opportunity to work with wildlife, particularly birds. She had had little experience working with birds so she was excited to see what she could learn.

The WRCNU, located in Ogden, Utah, is heavily supported by a dedicated workforce of more than 250 volunteers. Their mission statement is: “Through wildlife rehabilitation and education we will empower the community to engage in conservation and responsible stewardship of wildlife and habitat.”

Morgan saw this statement in action as she learned from the volunteers and DaLyn Erickson, the wildlife specialist and driving force behind the center.

When Morgan arrived, she thought that she would not be allowed to see the raptors. To her surprise, she was assigned to sweep up the droppings in the raptor area. This allowed her to glance, covertly, at a red-tailed hawk, a barn owl, and a small falcon as their area was being cleaned. She said that the experience was amazing because of the beauty of these powerful birds.

Another opportunity came when she was able to watch the volunteers give fluid therapy to a bald eagle that had lead poisoning. Morgan learned that much of what had happened to this eagle could have been prevented if humans had been better educated on the deadly effects of lead on wildlife.

A few key things Morgan learned:

The debilitating impact of imprinting.

The terrible effects of lead poisoning.

The importance of letting nature take its course.

Staring too long at a raptor can kill it.

At the WRCNU, they do everything they can to help animals heal quickly so that they can be released back into the wild and with as little reliance upon humans as possible. Morgan was able to help in this process by preparing and logging food for the raptors. Careful records are kept on each bird, including the amounts of food they are or are not eating. This is a critical part of monitoring the health of these birds of prey. All of the food preparations are done in a separate room from where the birds are housed.

Morgan was very impressed by the dedication and efforts put forth by all the volunteers at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Northern Utah. She learned so much from them in the four hours that she was there and she is excited to go back and volunteer again very soon.

“I learned so much there,” Morgan said. “Because I was a blank slate, I soaked up as much as I could about anything and everything I could.”

Weekly, Broadview University-Layton massage therapist students provide injury and maintenance massage to these highly skilled professional athletes. Each athlete understands human performance and has a clear understanding of their body’s ability to meet the demands of their career. Open discussions ensure each clinical session among students, athletes, instructors, and the team trainer identifies individual needs, making sure techniques are delivered safely and successfully while promoting health, preventing injury, and supporting performance goals.

Sports massage applications help athletes address regional and systemic soft tissue needs with noninvasive therapeutic touch. Historically, athletes who include sports massage in their training program recover faster from fatigue and injury. Additional benefits include a reported decrease in muscle stiffness, joint pain and edema.

Palpation, visual assessments, client interviews and functional evaluations are activities no sports therapist should eliminate. From game time observations to more intimate practitioner-athlete appraisals, our student massage therapists actively assess movement, gait, soft tissue integrity, and inflammation.

Broadview University massage student practitioners are very fortunate to have the opportunity to refine and hone their sports massage skills with a professional sports team engaged in providing students a rich educational experience that exceeds expectations.

Clinical experiences provide lifelong opportunities for massage students’ skill development and refinement. Textbook theory and instructions come to life as student practitioners submerge themselves in the application and execution of their duties provided within their field’s scope of practice. Rich clinical environments provide challenges and rewards for practitioners and participants alike. The clinical opportunity provided by the Utah Blaze arena football team to the Broadview University massage therapy program, is one such clinical experience.

Gratitude and thanksgiving to the Utah Blaze organization—you make learning rock!

(EMMETT) When people think about college kids and spring break, they often get images of rowdy crowds, the beach scene, all-out wildness, and having fun. Well, that’s not exactly how it goes down in Emmett, Idaho. The closest beach is hundreds of miles away. Now granted, there is quite a bit of “wildness” and fun that goes on in the heart of Gem County. The tiny town was actually the destination of choice for some students from Broadview University-Boise campus. They traded in shorts and swimsuits for scrubs and microscopes. And instead of diving into a pool, they dove headfirst into learning with some kids at a 4-H camp.

Shy shows kids how to prepare a slide for parasite testing.

“Get the freshest pile you can find, stick this in there, then come back to me.”

“This” is a testing device. “Me” is a student in the veterinary technology program. “Pile” is… well, the end result of a horse’s breakfast.

“Hey, look. It’s not that bad. It’s kind of like re-hydrated hay.”

For the better part of two hours, statements like these could be heard throughout the commotion at Spring Fever 4-H Camp. Approximately 25 kids of all ages spent this day learning all about their horses—from the inside out. Their primary focus was the digestive tract. Their teachers were six students who taught them how to take samples from their own horses and perform different tests.

The kids made their own slides and then examined them under a microscope to look for parasites. They also filled thin plastic gloves with water and the “re-hydrated” hay, then hung them up like low-hanging balloons to let things settle. Twenty minutes later, they were shown how to check if their horses have sand in their digestive tract. They are taught that sand hinders digestion and can make horses sick. It can also lead to impaction and cause colic.

“These are the same tests that would be done at your vet’s office,” Shy Askew, a veterinary technology student, explains to the kids. As she directs the kids on what to do, she goes on to say, “We are vet tech students. This reinforces our learning. In doing things like this, we can stand back and say, ‘Oh yeah. That’s right. I really do remember what I learned.’”

Ayla shows the kids what to look for on the slides once they are prepared.

Kayla, who attends a charter school in Meridian, likes what she sees. She has an interest in veterinary medicine “It’s kinda cool seeing what’s inside of my own horse,” she says.

The day’s lesson ends with a question-and-answer session. The kids are quizzed on what they know, and a right answer leads to what every kid likes after a hard day’s brain workout—candy, of course. And it’s amazing what these kids know.

“What do rabbits and horses have in common,” Shy asks. The answer is: they don’t have a gallbladder. Oh, and if you’re wondering, horses don’t regurgitate like cows do, either. But one thing is common about all animals. They have the ability to provide lessons that can make a variety of kids interested in spending spring break far away from any beach.

(MERIDIAN) The next time someone asks what your favorite Lifesavers flavor is, I am going to recommend pink. Not because the pink ones are just plain fruitylicious—it’s because a big pink lifesaver recently set-up in our campus parking lot and literally lived up to its reputation. It saved a life.

Broadview University-Boise campus held its first-ever Health Fair during Heart Health Month. As part of a multi-faceted effort to promote healthy living, organizations of all sizes were invited to offer lifesaving services. One organization in particular, Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, ended up making a lifesaving discovery.

On Thursday, February 21, a 40-foot-long, bright pink bus set up in the campus’s parking. For six straight hours, two technicians provided 21 women with potentially lifesaving breast exams on board St. Al’s Mobile Mammography unit. The unit, which is part of an outreach program, travels the region and provides the same screening services that can be received from Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise.

As a result of February’s event, at least one woman came back with results that weren’t exactly favorable. Her best friend sent the following message on Facebook a short time later:

“So, I have to thank you for suggesting the Breast Cancer Screening. As you may remember, my mom, my friend and myself got [screened]. As a result, my mom and I are fine but my friend has had an ultrasound and 3 biopsies since our visit and now has an appointment with a surgeon. While we are not sure what the future brings for my BFF, I know that whatever it holds… I owe you a huge thank you.”

St. Al’s Mobile Mammography unit

Since this message was sent, the woman has had a pre-cancerous mass removed, and is now on her way towards recovery. If it weren’t for this event, her future may not have the same outlook as it does now.

“If we wouldn’t have gone, we would have missed it and I could have possibly lost my BFF,” the message continued.

The big pink bus is coming back to Broadview University on Tuesday, October 16, as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Mammograms will be available for women between the ages of 35 and 64. Insurance companies—which typically cover mammograms at 100 percent—are billed. Grants are available for women who do not have insurance. No one is turned away. Please share this information with anyone you can think of who may need this lifesaving check.

Syracuse High School held their first ever College Fair for Junior’s on April 11th, 2013. Over seven hundred students participated in this event. This event was planned to get Junior’s to start thinking about their future earlier. Procrastination is the order of the day for most kids, and sometimes that can have a negative impact on their education. Whether it is missing scholarship opportunities or missing application deadlines, the wait to decide what they want to do after high school can have repercussions that are felt long after that high school graduation cap is thrown in the air. High School Representative Shae Erhart, Program Chair of Paralegal Studies Jessica Nelson, and Program Chair of Medical Programs Terra Vangerven represented Broadview University at this event, providing useful information about the benefits of a college education and what Broadview University can offer.

Throughout the college fair, students were required to complete an assignment that required them to ask questions about tuition, scholarships and other important topics. The majority of the students that visited the Broadview University table were genuinely interested in the programs that we offered and sought additional information. These high school students asked thought provoking questions about our programs and were starting to understand that these important decisions were right around the corner. Students were excited that we provide a small, hands-on learning environment and that we were located nearby. Every student that stopped by the Broadview University table was informed about the scholarship workshops that we offer. Many were interested to find out that they can take up to four free classes at our campus during their senior year to get a jump start on their education.

At the end of the day, the Junior Jump Start Day was a success. We met a lot of great kids, and hopefully got them excited about college!
