National “Write Your Congressman” Speaks to Global Citizenship Class

United States Capitol Building

A spokesman for National Write Your Congressman spoke to the students of Global Citizenship, June 6th. National Write Your Congressman was founded in 1958 by David Adamson and is the leading source of mail received by members of Congress from their constituents. Constituent opinions have more influence on members of Congress than lobbyists, popular media or other political leaders. However, people are often too busy to express their opinions or to get informed on the issues that affect us all. National Write Your Congressman is an unbiased and nonpartisan organization which encourages the citizens to get more involved in the political process.

Kenny Conners, a very dynamic spokesman for National Write Your Congressman, spent an hour and a half with the students. During that time, the students actually went to the computer lab, logged on and wrote to a Senator or Representative. Letters were written to Senators Orin Hatch and Mike Lee, and Representative Jason Chaffetz. Many students received almost immediate replies.

As stated by Edmund Burke, an English statesman and supporter of the American Revolution, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” We all need to be involved in the political process. We appreciate great organizations like the National Write Your Congressman Foundation.
